The Kubb World Championship 2006 -- Team Big Love

Kubb is a strange Swedish game about which we knew nothing at all two months ago, but are now having to learn extremely fast, because we are now the official Great British team, taking part in the World Championship on August 3rd and 4th...

Kubb basically involves teams of six throwing sticks at blocks of wood that are standing in front of their opponents, to try to knock them all down before they knock down yours. It's kind of like a drunken conversation between dodgeball, skittles and croquet. Apparently its huge in Sweden, where most households have a Kubb set.

After the success of previous challenges and events, Big Love are now turning our attention to doing more creative and outlandish things than the standard challenges, and this is where Kubb comes in.

We heard about Kubb through a Swedish friend of ours, and when we found out about the World Championship we realised that out of the 100+ international teams involved, none were from Britain - so we quickly registered 'Team Big Love', and organised a team of six Big Lovers to take part.

The team is: Jonny Coller, Jim Meysey-Thompson, James Wallis, Tom Gauge, Charlie Arthy and Paddy Phillips.

Please show your support for your national team by sponsoring us here, all money will be going to Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

The game is played on a playing ground 5x8 meters, the size can be less or more depending on the skills of the players, the playing ground should be fairly smooth and flat, usually we play on grass but gravel, flat rock or snow could also do.

The game pieces are made of wood and one set consists of the following parts:

1 KING approx. 9x9 cm square and 30 cm height.
10 KUBBS approx. 7x7 cm square and 15 cm height.
6 THROWING BATONS,  round 44 mm in diameter and 30 cm in length.
4 CORNER STICKS 2x2x30 cm is also useful to have.

1:King, 2:Kubbs, 3:Throwing batons, 4:Corner stick, 5:Baseline

The players are divided in two teams and take place behind their respectably baseline. The game's aim is to knock down the kubbs of the other team with the throwing batons according to the rules. When all the kubbs are knocked down, the king should be knocked down, the team which does this has won.
